Counting cards is a strategy generally used for black jack. The method is used to keep track of the high cards and low cards by counting. It’s no illegal because you are using your mind and not a computerized devise. However, casinos can kick you out for it in Nevada. Since Casino’s in Nevada are built on private property they can remove you for any reason and nail you for trespassing.
There is no rule about “counting cards” in Holdem. Counting cards usually refers to blackjack. If you can deduce something from the way players have acted, that is fair. One thing here: The only way to really notice any extra card info the other player’s aren’t aware of would be if you have some sort of cheating mechanism. Of course, that would be against the rules. The player would be kicked out of the game and banned. A good dealer will prevent players from being able to use mirrors or other reflective items to see cards shuffled, mucked or burnt.
